Computer System Requirements & Recommendations - ExitCare® v7.0 (release expected March/April 2008)

For ExitCare Server:

ExitCare 7 uses SQL Server for its data engine.

ExitCare has been designed to work with all versions of MS SQL 2005, including the free MS SQL Server Express. The free Express edition of MS-SQL Server is best suited for smaller installations. If your installation supports many concurrent users, we recommend the full version of MS-SQL 2005 for optimal performance.

The requirements for ExitCare will change if/when Microsoft changes its requirements for SQL. These requirements can change with little or no notice. The URL to check for the latest specifications is listed below the following table. As of February 14, 2008 the specifications, direct from Microsoft’s website for MS-SQL 2005 Express are:

Framework

Before installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, you must download and install the .NET Framework 2.0 from this Microsoft Web site.

Notes:
  • SQL Server 2005 Express Edition requires the .NET Framework 2.0. Before installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, you must download and install the .NET Framework 2.0 from this Microsoft Web site.
  • SQL Server 2005 does not support the Banyan VINES Sequenced Packet protocol (SPP), Multiprotocol, AppleTalk, or NWLink IPX/SPX network protocols. Clients previously connecting with these protocols must select a different protocol to connect to SQL Server 2005.
  • SQL Server 2005 software works on the hardware certified for use with the Microsoft Windows operating system.
  • Actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you choose to install. Additional available hard-disk space may be required.
  • SQL Server 2005 Express Edition will also run on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-bit x64 Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter edition with Service Pack 1 or later running in Windows on Windows.

Note:

ExitCare has the ability to use SQL Express on the workstations to offer local caching and off line mode. Local caching may speed up ExitCare. If you would like to have local caching or off-line mode, please refer to the system requirements for SQL Server Express. For local caching hard drive space requirements, refer to SQL Server Specifications and the Additional ExitCare Specifications information.

Printing

Color printing is highly recommended but not required (Call ExitCare for more details before selecting). Color printing choices include, among others, Xerox, Canon and HP models. Color ink-jet printing is an option, but color laser printing is continuing to improve in speed while coming substantially down in price. Always compare printer duty cycles with actual printing needs. Other factors include network capabilities and the need for and availability of multiple paper trays (for Rx printing). We estimate a color printing cost of about ten to fifteen cents per patient for a single discharge instruction title. Most Windows-based laser or ink-jet printers can be used. For Rx printing, “label printers” such as Star Micronics products can be used.

Other Software:
  • Faxing: Microsoft Fax for faxing prescriptions to pharmacies, or the Patient Signature Page to follow-up providers.
  • E-Mail: Fully MAPI compliant e-mail program for e-mailing prescriptions to pharmacies or discharge instructions to follow-up providers. For example, Outlook (full) works, but Outlook Express does not.
