Elsevier Acquires ExitCare, Provider of Patient Education Solutions

Elsevier Acquires ExitCare, Provider of Patient Education Solutions
Integrating ExitCare with Elsevier’s suite of clinical decision support solutions provides a comprehensive set of offerings – available independently and through an EHR – to help clinicians improve patient outcomes, manage costly readmissions and control healthcare expenditures

Philadelphia, PA, Sept. 11, 2012 – Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, announced today the acquisition of ExitCare LLC, an enterprise-wide solution for patient education and discharge instructions. ExitCare provides peer-reviewed patient education and discharge instructions to support clinicians, empower patients and help providers meet their patients’ educational needs.

Focused on improving patient care and outcomes, Elsevier and ExitCare solutions give healthcare providers the tools and information necessary to ensure that patients are discharged in accordance with The Joint Commission and Meaningful Use requirements. ExitCare’s products, incorporated into Elsevier’s portfolio of clinical decision support (CDS) content and tools, will help healthcare providers improve the delivery of healthcare information and services by interdisciplinary care teams across all care environments.

“This acquisition allows Elsevier to offer a more comprehensive and better integrated point-of-care decision support solution to our customers,” said Jay Katzen, Managing Director of Elsevier’s Clinical Decision Support group. “ExitCare’s team and offerings add substantial expertise and depth in patient education to our suite of solutions, and we look forward to providing an enhanced experience for our customers as they work to improve patient safety and outcomes.”

Relevant and accurate patient information delivered to patients throughout the care continuum is integral to improving patient outcomes and safety. ExitCare will provide Elsevier with associated print, electronic and video patient education content and tools that are critical to increasing patient engagement and reducing readmissions, and also meet the emerging needs of both hospitals and office-based physicians who wish to provide a multimedia education experience for their patients. Elsevier and ExitCare first began collaborating in November 2011 on several content solutions, including Mosby’s Nursing Consult, Clinical Pharmacology and MD Consult.

“Our extensive group of nearly 60 domestic and international resellers – including hospital information systems, electronic medical record and other companies – will benefit from the complementary suite of products to improve the provider experience and enhance clinical workflow and documentation in today’s regulatory environment,” said Roger Jacobi, President of ExitCare. “Together we address the needs of hospitals, urgent care centers and physicians’ practices that must empower patients with informational and educational content. Our sophisticated product and market development, 12 different languages and content that contains meta tags including ICD-9 and 10, CPT, gender, age, cognitive level, language and more will enable Elsevier customers to answer the demands of various patient populations.”

Elsevier’s primary clinical constituents use ExitCare’s patient education material to evaluate care, plan for care, facilitate transitions of care, and educate patients on their diseases, medications, labs and all other critical health information available at the point of care. The content is delivered through referential solutions and is also embedded into the clinical workflow through EHR integration.

ExitCare is headquartered in Minnesota. The acquisition is effective immediately and financial terms of the transaction are not being disclosed.

ExitCare Selects Health Language to Assign ICD-10 and LOINC Codes to Patient Education Content

Partnership expansion enables ExitCare customers to provide patients with targeted educational materials according to ICD-10 standards

DENVER – April 18, 2012 – Health Language, Inc. (HLI), the global leader in healthcare terminology management, announced an expansion of its relationship with ExitCare, LLC, an enterprise-wide solution for patient education.

Since 2007, HLI has been responsible for applying and updating both ICD-9 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes to ExitCare’s extensive library of more than 4,000 patient education documents. ExitCare recently chose HLI to complete the process of assigning ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes to its respective documents. Additionally, HLI will map LOINC codes to ExitLabs®, a library containing content to support more than 300 common lab tests.

This initiative will provide the highest level of reliability and readiness required for ExitCare customers to leverage patient education content, particularly when ICD-10 conversion and compliance is required in 2014 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Initial mapping for both ICD-10 and LOINC coding is expected to be complete by May 2012.

Not only will HLI and ExitCare work together to complete this process, but ExitCare will continue to rely on HLI to update and maintain the tagging structure that exists for such standard medical taxonomies. “Partnering with HLI to standardize the quality and granularity of information delivered to our customers is a critical part of enhancing the provider/patient relationship,” said Roger Jacobi, President of ExitCare.
“We are pleased to facilitate this process through our advanced Language Engine and clinical domain knowledge expertise, a process that demands proficient aggregation of information to support ExitCare’s world-class patient education content,” said George Schwend, CEO and president of HLI.

ExitCare and Xpress Technologies Announce Partnership

Supporting Clinicians to Empower Patients

Jacksonville, Fla. — Xpress Technologies has expanded its Electronic Health Record (EHR) to include integration of patient education content powered by ExitCare, LLC. The addition of discharge instructions and patient education to this platform will help providers and facilities meet meaningful use requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 instituted incentive programs that will provide payments to eligible professionals, hospitals and critical access hospitals as they implement or demonstrate “meaningful use” of certified EHR technology. "Simply put, ‘meaningful use’ means providers need to show they're using certified EHR technology in ways that can be measured significantly in quality and in quantity,” according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“ExitCare is excited to partner with Xpress Technologies,” states ExitCare’s Executive Vice President Richard Thompson. “Xpress Technologies is a recognized leader in the market because of its proven innovation and technology.”

Over the last 28 years, Xpress Technologies has refined and streamlined XpressCharts EHR to be one of the most advanced emergency department and urgent care EHRs on the market today. XpressCharts is a thorough, chief complaint-driven, digital record of a patient encounter that can be completed in minutes.

From its inception, ExitCare has specialized in the design and development of discharge Instructions and patient education information—strategically choosing not to enter the field of patient tracking, charting and billing. This level of expertise has positioned ExitCare as a premier patient education solutions provider to companies like Xpress Technologies for a more diversified product portfolio.

“We appreciate that ExitCare is recognized as the market leader for discharge instructions and patient education content,” said Xpress Technologies CEO, Ralph Badanowski, MD. “The company has clearly differentiated itself by providing an enterprise-wide solution. ExitCare was able to meet all of our market needs with emergency department and urgent care center-tailored information in ten different languages as well as standard and Easy-to-Read documents.”

“The addition of ExitCare to XpressCharts was a natural fit,” said Xpress Technologies COO, Walter Reese. “Together we can provide a product that capitalizes on our respective fields of expertise to offer an all-in-one solution to our clients.”

Siemens Partners With ExitCare To Deliver Patient Education Services to Health IT Customers

The new relationship aims to bolster patient engagement in treatment and follow-up care plans.
August 12, 2010

Malvern, PA, August 12, 2010 – Today, Siemens Healthcare announced its newly-formed partnership with patient education content provider, ExitCare, to begin providing expanded patient education services to its broad health information technology customer base. The move stems from Siemens’ goal to equip healthcare providers with fresh, highly relevant, patient-focused educational offerings in an easy-to-access format that complement its existing medical software technologies portfolio.

Plans include establishing links to ExitCareED™ Emergency Department and ExitCareIP™ Inpatient educational content within Siemens health IT customers’ workflows, thereby giving executives, clinicians, and administrators a fast, integrated way to view, distribute, and document patient-specific discharge instructions and general patient education information throughout the continuum of care.

“Because there is a strong correlation between the success of a patient’s treatment and recovery plan and that patient’s access to basic information about his or her condition, it is essential that healthcare providers have an easy way to deliver such education to all those they treat,” said Don Rucker, chief medical officer, Siemens Healthcare. “We are excited about the prospect of our partnership with ExitCare and look forward to the added value it will bring to our customers during both immediate and long terms.”

“Partnering with an industry leader like Siemens means that even more patients will soon become empowered to further participate in their own care,” said Richard Thompson, ExitCare executive vice president. “As a leading discharge instruction and patient education content provider, our unique enterprise-wide solution offers multiple languages and reading levels and relies heavily on graphics, bullets, subheads, and the use of color, all of which combine to make diagnosis and medical condition information easier to understand and engaging.”

The announcement was made at Innovations ‘10 for Healthcare IT in Orlando, FL, a symposium where Siemens health information technology customers can share ideas and expand their knowledge around invaluable tools and innovative strategies that will help them improve efficiencies and stay ahead of the technological curve.

T-System Updates Free Clinician H1N1 Templates
To Latest CDC Guidelines, Adds Discharge Instructions

Downloadable Templates Reflect Most Current Seasonal and Swine Flu Protocols; Charts Available at No Charge to All Healthcare Professionals Including Emergency Clinicians
September 21, 2009

DALLAS, TX – (DATE) – T-System, Inc., the nation’s largest provider of emergency department (ED) clinical documentation tools, today announced it has issued revised H1N1 point-of-care charting templates reflecting the most recent recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The charts, which are available for free download via the T-System Web site (www.tsystem.com/h1n1flu), now include discharge instructions for patients, developed by ExitCare, the leader in physician-authored, peer-reviewed, evidence-based Discharge Instruction and Patient Education information.

T-System has included three classes of charts in the download (physician, nurse and order sets) and has also developed a set for pediatric use as well as for primary and urgent care clinics. The charts include guidelines for both the H1N1 virus and seasonal flu that enable consistent documentation, diagnosis and treatment.

“T-System continues to closely monitor the evolving H1N1 situation. These revised templates help physicians and nurses in emergency departments, urgent care facilities and primary care practices to provide the most up-to-date, accurate, consistent and complete care to affected individuals,” said Suzette Wier-Thorby RN, senior vice president and chief nursing officer for T-System. “Our current flu documentation includes content to address seasonal flu as well as H1N1, and we are very pleased to announce the inclusion of discharge instructions, made possible through our partnership with ExitCare. This all works to ensure that providers have the tools they need to provide a full spectrum of care for their patients as flu cases continue to ramp up.”

Initially released in May, the H1N1 templates from T-System provided immediate value for clinicians. "When H1N1 first hit, CDC guidelines were literally changing every day," according to Randy Pilgrim, MD, FACEP, President and Chief Medical Officer for The Schumacher Group, a leading emergency management firm. "Because we could continuously implement the most current information and guidelines across multiple emergency departments, thousands of physicians were able to remain focused on our core competency: delivering efficient, high quality patient care.”

"The T-System has been an important partner with The Schumacher Group for over a decade," Dr. Pilgrim added. "The H1N1 t-sheets are a great example of T-System’s leadership and commitment to impacting significant and timely documentation challenges in emergency medicine."

Although flu season typically begins in November, H1N1 has brought an early start to flu season, especially among colleges and public schools. While the H1N1 vaccine has recently been approved for broad national distribution, a report by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology predicts that intensive care units across the nation will still be under “enormous stress” to treat cases of H1N1 and seasonal flu. The report stated that between 30 and 50 percent of the American population could be infected with the H1N1 virus during the fall and winter.

T-System’s H1N1 T-Sheets® are point-of-care tools to support consistent documentation, diagnosis and treatment for the remainder of the H1N1 alert and are not intended to replace clinical judgment. To download the charting templates with current CDC guidelines for H1N1 flu diagnosis and treatment, or to find out more information about the H1N1 virus, please visit: www.tsystem.com/H1N1flu.

ExitCare, LLC announces partnership with
Health Language, Inc.

Health Language and ExitCare Partner to Improve and Automate Patient Education and Discharge Instructions
September 22, 2008

DENVER & LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Sept. 22, 2008 – Health Language, Inc. ® (HLI) and ExitCare, LLC, the leading enterprise-wide patient discharge instruction and education information company, today announced a partnership to expedite the ability of physicians to provide patients with immediate, accurate and comprehensive patient education and discharge instructions.

HLI, the world’s leading supplier of language engine technology for medical vocabulary mapping and interoperability, will review and tag all of ExitCare’s 3,300-plus titles with ICD-9-CM (and eventually ICD-10-CM), CPT-4 and SNOMED CT codes to enable physicians to immediately find the appropriate handout for each patient. HLI’s Language Engine has the ability to automatically map ICD-9-CM codes to the mandated ICD-10-CM codes, ensuring a seamless transition.

“HealthLanguage is the ideal partner to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of physicians and patients in the U.S. as well as our growing market worldwide,” said Chuck Krejci, chief operating officer of ExitCare. HealthLanguage already has a proven track record and significant footprint internationally where SNOMED has been more widely adopted. It is vital that all of our titles, which have been translated into eight languages, are coded correctly to ensure that physicians and patients receive the right information at the right time.”

“We are pleased to work with a company that places the same premium on linking content to the most granular codes available,” stated HLI CEO George Schwend. “Further enhancing the synergies of the partnership are the existing vendor relationships of both companies. ExitCare’s products have been integrated with programs from many of the same vendors that use HLI’s Language Engine to facilitate interoperability in inpatient and ambulatory care applications.”

HLI’s automated software tools will do the initial coding, which will then be reviewed in detail by HLI’s clinician coding experts to ensure accurate tagging. This will guarantee that when physicians enter an ICD, CPT or SNOMED code or use an electronic health record to trigger a diagnosis or procedure code, they will receive the exact handout that a patient with a particular condition needs.
